The IRS will begin accepting returns on January 23. Why so late? Well, the sharp increase in tax identify theft over the past few years made the IRS take some drastic steps to ensure that they were giving refunds to the actual taxpayer. People claiming Earned Income Credit (EIC), Child Tax credit and/or the American Opportunity Education Credit will have to weight until at least February 15 before receiving their refunds. The IRS expects the actual release date for their refund checks to be around the end of February.
